Gaza unrest

On this day, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya accepted the resignation of Interior Minister Hani Qawasmi, following a new wave of factional fighting in the Gaza Strip. The violent incidents were the worst since Hamas and Fatah agreed to form a unity government in February 2007, casting serious doubts about the power-sharing partnership between the two Palestinian groups. At the end of an emergency meeting by the Palestinian government I interviewed Ahmed Soba, vice-minister for foreign affairs, who gave his interpretation of the day's events.

The violence that led to Qawasmi's resignation - with five dead and 18 injured - was the worst in a single day since February. Approximately 400 people died in clashes between the two factions since Hamas took power in 2006.

A more polarised world?

Amnesty International's Report 2007 accused powerful governments and armed groups of fomenting fear to erode human rights worldwide. The group says policies such as those linked to the so-called "war on terror" are creating a more polarised and dangerous world. It also adds that the world has been impotent in the face of major crisis, such as Darfur. I spoke with Claudia Pedra, of Amnesty International Portugal about the report, and heard from Marise Castro, of Amnesty International in London, about the group's criticism of forced eviction in Angola.
