China and Angola, a Love Affair...

The impact of China's new-found prosperity is particularly stark in Angola, China's second largest trade partner in Africa. In recent years, Angola has supplanted Saudi Arabia as China's premier supplier of crude oil, accounting to 15 per cent of China's total imports. The two countries' bilateral trade volume hit 4.9 billion US dolars in 2004 and 6.95 billion in 2005. I interviewed Angolan economist José Cerqueira, an expert on sino-angolan ties for more insights into these newly-cemented friendship.

This programme served as the basis for an article written by me and published in the BBC World Service's World Agenda magazine. Read this story here.

Tourism and Conservation

Portuguese environmental groups told the BBC that more than half of the country's wildlife has come under threat since the country joined the European Union 20 years ago. The environmentalists say the massive redevelopment made possible by EU grants is partly to blame. To find out how construction, tourism and conservation have contributed to the degradation of the country's wildlife and nature resources I spoke with Dr Francisco Ferreira of Portuguese environmental agency Quercus, who also offered good'practice suggestions to countries such as Cape Verde and Mozambique where the tourism sector is also growing fast.

Mozambique and the Internet

The Internet was introduced in Mozambique in 1993 by Eduardo Mondlane University, through its Information Technology Department (CIUEM). Despite being one of the first African countries to adopt the Intrnet and helping neighbouring countries do the same, today Mozambique has one of the lowest usage rates in the continent, while the quality of the services remains poor. To find out why I interviewed the director of the CIUEM, Américo Muchanga.

A number of initiatives are under way in Mozambique in order to make the Internet available outside major cities. Eduardo Mondlane University for instance is developing a project funded by the World Bank and the IDRC to install networks in 20 schools.
